Judging A Book By Its Cover: Sacre Bleu

This is my weekly post where I choose to appreciate a book for its cover art or overall design – to me, a well designed book is like a piece of art. We all judge book covers to some extent. Personally, it’s usually a title/cover combination that pulls me in when I’m browsing in a bookstore. I can’t say that I’ve ever decided against a book with terrible cover art if I liked the sound of the plot, but I have purchased special editions of books, or multiple editions of books based on their cover art. If book covers didn’t matter, publishers (looking at you, Penguin!) wouldn’t put out so many beautiful editions!

Christopher Moore is one of my favorite writers and I was beyond excited when I found out about this book back in 2012. I knew I had to have the special edition hardcover, complete with some full color pictures and blue ink! The cherry on top was that he was doing a tour, so he came to Boston and I was able to hear him talk (he’s very funny) and then awkwardly stand like a silent, awestruck weirdo, desperately wishing I had something witty to say, while he signed my book!

It’s just a wonderful book to look at and hold (and of course I enjoyed the story itself) and I’m glad I didn’t wait for the paperback on this one. ISBN: 9780061779749

  1. What a great article. I just discovered this author–went looking for “Lamb”, saw “Sacre Bleu” and added it to my cart immediately. Glad I didn’t order it yet because thanks to you, I’ll get the special edition hardcover instead of the paperback I initially chose. Can’t WAIT to read it! Satire, art, and a liberal measure of crazy? Just my thing. 😀

    • I’m so happy to hear that I helped! It’s definitely worth getting the hardcover. It’s so beautiful! And, as usual, Christopher Moore cracks me up! I hope you enjoy the book. :] I have the special edition of Lamb as well – it looks like a bible, complete with gilded edges. Another of my favorites.
