2018 Reading Goals

I’ll post an official wrap up in the new year, but I’ve had a very successful reading year and I hope to do even better next year. Time to discuss goals!

First, let me say, it’s not just about the numbers.  I see a lot on social media (ok, mostly Twitter) that people get bummed when others post about how many books they’ve read and that sometimes it feels like a competition. I totally understand. I don’t want my numbers to make you feel bad – the only person I’m competing against is Book Buying Millie (my alter ego who happens to have full control of my credit card.) I’ve mentioned in previous posts that I dedicate the majority of my free time (and the hours when I should be sleeping) to reading; if you choose not to do that, it’s ok! Just knowing that you love reading and appreciate books is enough.

With that out of the way, I’m setting myself the highest reading goal yet (this year’s was initially 110-112, and I upped it at the end of the year,  so that doesn’t count) – a whopping 125! Between novellas (which seem to be the new trend) and audiobooks (which I listen to on and off) I think I should be able to accomplish that.

Another goal of mine is to get my review pile under control. I’ve received more review copies this year than in the past and I desperately need to play catch-up. My plan was to do that before the new year, but November and December are so busy and that was a terrible plan.

As usual, I have a zillion series(es?!) I need to finish, but let’s be real, we know I likely won’t do that.

My biggest priority is to read the damn books that have been on my shelf for eons. Like, what is wrong with me!? I’ve devised a system for this that I touched on briefly in my November wrap up and I’ll expand on in January.

Low key goals are to do a serious purge of my shelves and get rid of the books I know I’m not interested in reading or rereading and do at least try to get a handle on my book buying. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll never stop hoarding, but I want to be more selective.

~

What are your goals for the new year (if you don’t set them, that’s ok!) and are they similar to mine? If you’ve got a massive pile of unread books taunting you daily, please let me know I’m not alone!

  1. I never really think about my stats. I can see how many books I’ve read on Goodreads, obviously, but the number rises or falls based on how busy I am that year, so I don’t see it as disappointing if I read fewer books. (Unless it’s disappointing I have less time to read??)

I don’t tend to set resolutions, either, though for a while I was attempting to read some books on my Goodreads to-read list. I wanted to get it under 400 books or something, but I keep adding books so that’s not, er, working out for me…. 😀
