August Wrap Up

August!

In August I read 8 books for a total of 1,937 pages and an average of 63 pages per day. Not as successful as my other months, but I chose some really solid books.

Had another DNF this month, but a decent number of four-star reads to balance it out. Plus, diving back into the Freddy’s franchise, which I love, hate and love to hate.

Reviewed:

Record of a Spaceborn Few by Becky Chambers
First Sentence: “Mom, can I go see the stars?”
Notable Quote: “Perhaps none of us can truly explain death. Perhaps none of us should.”

The Silver Eyes by Kira Breed-Wrisley & Scott Cawthon
First Sentence: He sees me.

Dreadful Company by Vivian Shaw
First Sentence: There was a monster in Greta Helsing’s hotel bathroom sink.

Mary Who Wrote Frankenstein by Linda Bailey
First Sentence: How does a story begin?

A few thoughts on Goodreads:

Harry Potter & The Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling
-Audiobook-

Reviews to come:

Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse
First Sentence: The monster has been here.
Notable Quote: “Words matter. The name you give things, it forms them when you speak. You must always be careful with your words.”

The Twisted Ones by Kira Breed-Wrisley & Scott Cawthon
First Sentence: Don’t trust your eyes.

The Cat at the Wall by Deborah Ellis
First Sentence: My name is still Clare.

DNF:

Space Opera by Catherynne M. Valente
First Sentence: Once upon a time on a small, watery, excitable planet called Earth, in a small, watery, excitable country called Italy, a soft-spoken, rather nice-looking gentleman by the name of Enrico Fermi was born into a family so over-protective that he felt compelled to invent the atomic bomb.

We’re not going to talk about my TBR Teardown progress once again because I didn’t even attempt to tackle those books. And as usual, I’m giving myself a chance to try again, because it’s my challenge and I’ll do what I want, dammit!

I’ve got another quarterly update for you (scary how fast this year is going by, let’s not talk about that) – and I’ve also suddenly realized that I’m an asshole who doesn’t understand numbers, because, in order to do quarterly updates, I’d need to update every 3 months. Instead, I’ve done every 4 months, cutting the year into thirds, not quarters. Talk about embarrassing!

Anyway, here’s an update: I’ve read 86 books so far. Goodreads is telling me I’m still 3 books ahead of my 125-book goal, which is great. My dusty bookshelf category (my really old backlog, basically) is only up to 13 books, which is still abysmal.

Of the 42 books I read this “quarter”:

Male authors: 17
Female authors: 27

5 stars: 11

4 stars: 19

3 stars: 8

2 stars: 3

1 star: 1

Not as many 5-star reads this time around; I think I’m getting a little pickier? I fluctuate between being really liberal with my 5-star ratings and slightly more discerning. I’m keeping those 2 and 1 stars low and I’m up to 6 DNFs for the year.

~

How are your goals coming along? Do you track any extra stats aside from the number of books you read?
