It’s February so that means in my world it’s Austen Month! If you’re new here, I focus on Jane Austen’s work and work inspired by her in February because…well, mostly because! My weak reasoning is that her books focus on romance and February has Valentine’s Day and also I love all things Austen. So, lots of love…February…that’s the connection. Mostly it’s just habit now.
This month I picked 7 books to read – that’s maybe ambitious since I have 2 TBR Take Down reads and at least one priority review book. Add in the movies and series I plan to try to watch and it’s a busy month! There’s also the possibility I’ll be re-reading and re-watching Austenland because I’m obsessed. Challenge accepted!
To Be Read:
Jane Austen’s Guide to Good Manners: Compliments, Charades & Horrible Blunders
By Josephine Ross, Illustrated by Henrietta Webb
This is a cute little etiquette guide given to me by my Aunt. I figured it’ll be a quick read and something that I assume will count as non-fiction.
Pride and Prejudice
By Jane Austen
I’m long overdue for a re-read and I want to annotate a copy of each of her books, so I’m starting with my favorite. I even bought special fancy page markers to try out! I’m never quite sure what my annotations will look like or if they’ll be worthy of a post (nothing is going to beat my Ready Player One annotations), but maybe I’ll do one for this.
Pride, Prejudice and Jasmin Field
By Melissa Nathan
This is a contemporary novel about a young woman who attends an audition for a special stage production of Pride and Prejudice. She lands the lead role and of course, some Hollywood hottie is set to play Darcy. Clearly they’ll fall in love, Lizzy and Darcy style and I’m here for it. I’m really hoping this one turns out of be a favorite of mine.
Heartstone & Dragonshadow
By Elle Katharine White
Christmas gifts from my friend Nicole, these books are a fantasy retelling of Pride and Prejudice with dragons! I am a bit wary, as these could prove to be incredibly cheesy – but there’s good cheese and bad cheese, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the good kind! I can already tell you though, the names of the leads, Alastair Daired and Aliza Bentaine, are already incredibly annoying to me! I’m dubbing them Ali and Al right now.
Jane Austen in Boca
By Paula Marantz Cohen
This is set in Boca Raton, FL and follows a “good-hearted meddler” (Emma, anyone?) trying to set up her mother in law with a wealthy widower (Austen loves a wealthy single man!) So basically it’s like, an Austen-style rom-com set in a retirement community? I’m really hoping this one gives me humorous, light-hearted feels.
By Ibi Zoboi
A contemporary retelling of Pride and Prejudice set in Brooklyn with POC main characters – sign me the hell up! Pretty sure this is YA, given the teen characters, but I’m expecting good things from this novel. Also that cover – to die for!
I’m happy with my line-up. I’ve got a mix of genres and age ranges. I’m hoping and expecting to enjoy all of these!
To Be Watched:
Miss Austen Regrets – 2008
This film is based on Austen’s letters and diary entries and seems like it will also focus on Austen’s relationship with her niece, Fanny Knight.
Sense & Sensibility – 2008
I absolutely loved the Emma mini-series, so I’m hoping to love this too.
Jane Austen – Life – 2005
This is an awkwardly titled documentary about Austen’s life. I suspect I’ll find this boring, but we’ll see!
Northanger Abbey – 1987
Can’t resist the old Austen movies!
Pride and Prejudice – 1995
I’d never heard of this mini-series! I figured I’d watched pretty much all the straight-forward Pride and Prejudice reinterpretations.
Mansfield Park – 1983
Another older mini-series. I didn’t enjoy my first read through of the novel, mostly because I hated Fanny, but I really hated the modern movie. I’m wondering if many the mini-series will spark my interest in re-reading this book.
Persuasion – 1995
I own this one on DVD (yay for library discards) and this is another where I’m hopeful the film will give me some more interest in the book.
Sense and Sensibility – 1981
Another mini-series – shockingly I’m not a fan of the Colin Firth Pride and Prejudice, so I’m not sure if I’ll enjoy this one either, but I want to give it a shot.
Let me know if you decide to participate or if you’ve read or watched anything on my list!
