It’s been a while since I did a tag and Zezee tagged me for this one two fucking years ago. I love the show , so let’s get into it! (I sound like a YouTuber lol)
This gem was created by Zaheerah.
+ Amateur Bake: A self-published book
The Ables by Jeremy Scott (of Cinema Sins!) – this is a great YA read about disabled superheroes. It might not be self-published now, but when I first purchased the original printing it was.
+ Soggy Bottom: A book with a great start and disappointing ending
I’m going to cheat and use a series for this – the Chaos Walking trilogy by Patrick Ness. I really enjoyed the first book because it felt fresh and unique. I loved the setting and style. Alas, book two started to frustrate me and book three was a slog. The actual ending of the series was complete bullshit.
+ Bingate: A book you got frustrated with and had to DNF (I’ve no idea what this is referencing in relation to the show)
How to Experience Death for Beginners by Jessica Branton – I was offered a copy of this book to review based on my review of Undead Girl Gang. UGG was a fantastic book. HtEDfB, not so much, and it was nothing like UGG. The writing was so poor and the plot made no sense. I had to stop torturing myself and it was hard to even give feedback, though I did on Goodreads because I felt some of the issues I had were important to share.
+ Junior Bake Off: A children’s book
Bear Out There by Jacob Grant – this book is ADORABLE. I love the color palette and the art style, so A+ for presentation!
+ A Hollywood Handshake: A book that impressed you (is it just me or is Hollywood a bit full of himself?!)
Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman – I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book and it turned out to be a wonderful and touching read.
+ Signature Challenge: A book you recommend to your friends and family (and of course, the online book community!
The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch – I feel like it’s been forever since I talked about this book. I probably wouldn’t actually recommend it to people who don’t love fantasy, but I might throw it out there if someone is interested in trying out more fantasy. I just love it so much. I want to reread it RIGHT NOW. My review is from 2015, back when I was trying to sound technical and professional. If I were to Re-Review it on the blog, the post would probably be all shouty caps and swears. In other words, perfection.
+ Technical Challenge: Books you read without knowing much beforehand; rank them from worst to best (I’m just going to pick three)
I picked three books I really didn’t enjoy:
Mathilda Savitch by Victor Lodato – I thought this was going to be a magical book, but instead it was pretentious drivel written by a grown-ass man about a young girl. Ugh.
The Time Collector by Gwendolyn Womack – fun fact, I mailed this garbage to a friend who enjoys magical realism (and a healthy dose of romance) and it never made it to her house, nor did it come back to me. Good riddance to that trash!
Heart of Stone by Elle Katharine White – this was disappointing, but I didn’t hate it. Fantasy Pride and Prejudice should be right up my alley, but it felt muddy. Had to DNF book two.
+ Showstopper Challenge: A book or series that’s your all-time favorite
The Abhorsen series by Garth Nix – there are so many books and series I could choose, but I just went with my gut. I’ve been reading this series since high school. I recommend the audiobooks of the original three, if you can listen, because TIM CURRY.
+ The Finalists: A favorite trilogy
The Bloodsucking Fiends trilogy by Christopher Moore – this is a hilarious contemporary vamp story set in Cali. It’s ridiculous, funny, and charming.
+ Extra Slice: A favorite companion book
The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy by Rachel Joyce – this is the companion to The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and I friggen’ loved it. I’M STILL NOT OVER THAT ENDING OK. I want to reread it right now and ugly-cry all night. Also if you read this, read Harold first, for maximum feels at the end of Queenie.
Well, there you have it! If you like the show, or tags, go ahead and do it! Feel free to let me know so I can read your answers!
Do you like, or dislike, any of these books?
