Judging A Book

Judging A Book By Its Cover: The Starless Sea

This is my weekly post where I highlight beautiful books from my collection. We all judge book covers to some extent (don’t lie, you totally do!) I created this feature to showcase and admire the art and design elements of some of the books I own. If covers didn’t matter, publishers wouldn’t make so many wonderful editions!

I scored a signed US edition of The Starless Sea from an indie bookstore. Then I remembered that UK editions were a thing and started swooning over that beautiful blue edition. Fortunately, I have amazing friends and the UK copy was gifted to me! I LOVE THEM BOTH SO MUCH OMG.

The US edition features a jacket illustration and endpaper art by Dan Funderburgh, jacket design by John Fontana, and book design by Pei Loi Kay, and was published in 2019 by Doubleday, ISBN: 9780385541213.

The UK edition has endpaper bee illustrations by Richard Merritt, jacket design by Suzanne Dean, and was published in 2019 by Penguin, ISBN: 9781910701454.

The cover is so lush and velvety – perfect for collecting my grubby fingerprints!

I am for sure getting some of these keys tattooed on me, whether I like the book or not (but I really hope I love the book!)

Can’t say I would recognize her signature if I didn’t know whose name it was.

Look how BLUE that cover is!

Love, love, love the edge designs!

Yo, I wanna be the owl king.

  1. Oh my gosh!! I’m in love with that UK edition. Why don’t the US ones go all out like that too??!! 😥
If I love the book, I’ll def hunt down one of those UK editions. It’s so beautiful!
